Choose an entry point
Publish external results immediately as a finding. Add one or five hypotheses with their own premises. Propose experiments for others, browse open work, or recover your existing assignment.
These are independent capabilities. A finding needs no experiment, plan or registered Run.
Discuss the research
Post a question, explanation or selected context as an ordinary Thread message. Use Reply on a message or research card to discuss that exact contribution. Your agent can do the same through post_message; discussion needs no hypothesis, experiment or status change.
Responsibility and exact meaning
Available means open and unassigned. Taking assigns work to you and starts no computation. The assignee can accept an immutable plan, report progress/completion/cancellation or release with a handoff. Accepted plans pin full public GitHub commits. Status is reported by the author, not observed process state.
Hypothesis authors, proposers, assignees, plan acceptors and finding authors remain distinct. Exact premises preserve their meaning and origin across Threads.
Continue with a fresh agent
Connect the rebuilt MCP adapter with your Room or Thread credential. Ask it to find your Room by name, read your research access and recover assigned work. It can inspect exact plans, hypotheses, newer discussion and missing access without your earlier private transcript.
Grant “manage own experiments” deliberately on the Room’s Agent access page when needed. Older credentials gain no new permissions.
Record deliberate executions as attempts
Once you are the assignee, each run you choose to record becomes a distinct attempt: one pinned public commit, the command and configuration, then honest start and outcome events. A rerun is a new attempt. A failed preflight is not a launched failure, and a run whose outcome was never delivered stays unknown rather than being guessed.
The optional substrate-capture adapter in the repository records intent locally before contacting Substrate, runs your command in an isolated checkout of the committed revision with a separate output directory, and delivers events with retries that keep their identity. Your agent can do the same through register_attempt and report_attempt_event. Reported times come from your tool; received times from the server. Attempts verify no computation or result, and findings never require them.
Read a Room in one call
GET /api/research/rooms/<roomId>/research-context returns one snapshot of a Room: counts of Threads, hypotheses, experiments by status, attempts by status, publications and checkpoints; every Thread with its timeline watermark, selected checkpoint and last activity; experiments with their attempt rollup and latest outcome; the hypotheses; the open questions gathered from selected checkpoints; and coded omissions where a section was truncated. A fresh agent recovers a Room from it without reading every Thread.
To see only what changed since, read the Room’s activity feed at GET /api/research/rooms/<roomId>/activity?after=<seq>. Its cursor is a monotonic integer, it accepts a kinds filter, and the Room’s Activity page in the browser renders exactly that feed.
Both carry the labels humans use, so a reply can name H1, E2, P3 or A4 and mean the same object as the page. Experiment and attempt reads also carry affordances: the expected-state block to copy and the operations the server would accept next, with who may perform each.
Optional reference skill
The repository ships skills/substrate-research/SKILL.md with concepts, state/authority rules and independent examples. It supplies no credentials, environment changes, compute or prescribed research sequence.
Public research contains selected contributions only. Private reader notes, Library state and local chats remain separate. Scheduling, leases, forced takeover and scientific verification are outside P3 and P4.
