Cross-language knowledge access: Qwen2.5-1.5B answers translation-paired Belebele and MMLU items less accurately in Polish than in English; Polish-heavy continued pretraining raises Polish accuracy on neither benchmark and the APT4 transplant widens the gap on neither. Cross-lingual residual patching transports the answer letter and fails its validity gate, so whether the gap is routing or representation stays open; the gap tracks question language on the base model, and the English twin in the prompt recovers part of it.

When Qwen2.5-1.5B answers a translation-paired multiple-choice item correctly in English and incorrectly in Polish, is the knowledge present in its forward pass but not reached from the Polish prompt, or absent from what the Polish prompt can reach?

The cross-lingual residual patch fails its validity gate at all 3 confirmed layer pairs; at 25 into 25 its flip rate 0.9663 comes with transport rate 0.9632, so routing versus representation is not adjudicated. Scaffold swaps change base-model accuracy by at most 0.0233; the English twin in the prompt recovers 0.4454 of the Belebele gap and 0.7969 of the MMLU gap.
