Library

Every paper you saved, in one sortable table

The Library is the list of every paper you have saved, shown as one sortable table, with your Collections in a sidebar beside it. It lives at /library and needs GitHub sign-in: opening it signed out sends you to the sign-in page and back again afterwards. Collections, the shared part, have their own page: Collections.

Save a paper

There are three ways in, and they all lead to the same shelf.

  • In the reader, press the bookmark, Save to Library. It becomes Saved to Library; press again to unsave.
  • In the reader, press the folder, Save to a collection, and pick a Collection. Filing saves the paper as well.
  • In the Library sidebar, paste an identifier or link into arXiv ID or link and press Save to Library. With a Collection open the button reads Save to collection and does both.

Saving fetches the paper’s title, authors and journal reference from arXiv. If arXiv cannot be reached the save is refused with Paper metadata is unavailable from arXiv. You can keep reading and retry saving shortly. The accepted identifier forms are listed on The reader.

The table

The heading reads Saved papers, with Only you · N papers above it and the reminder Your private shelf. Unsaving keeps your reader notes.

Sort and columns

Sort offers Saved (newest first), Title (A to Z) and Year (newest first). Choosing the current key again reverses the direction, and clicking a sortable column header does the same. Columns toggles Authors, Year, Venue and Saved; #, Title and Collections are locked on.

Both choices are remembered in this browser for your account, and the sort is remembered separately for the saved view and for Collections. They are not synced to other browsers.

Filter and paging

The table shows 50 papers at a time, newest saves first, with Showing 1–50 of N and Previous and Next in the footer. Filter saved papers narrows the rows by title, arXiv identifier or author name, and applies only to the page already loaded; the footer then counts matches on this page. To find a paper on another page, move to that page first.

Row actions

Clicking a row or its title opens the paper in the reader. At the end of each row:

  • The ellipsis (also a right-click on the row) opens a menu with Open in reader and Unsave.
  • The + button, Add to collection, lists your Collections with a check mark beside each one that already holds the paper. Clicking a Collection files the paper or takes it out again. New collection… at the bottom opens the sidebar form.

What unsaving does

Unsave removes the paper from your shelf and nothing else. Your private notes and highlights for it are kept and reappear when you open the paper again, and it stays in any Collection it was filed in. Saving it again later restores the row with a new saved date.

The Library is yours alone. Nobody can see what you have saved, and your reader notes are never shown to Collection members; a Collection only shares which papers are in it and the discussion about them.

The sidebar

Saved papers shows the total on your shelf. Each Collection below it shows a colour dot, its name and its note count; the count is styled as unread when members have posted since you last looked. New collection opens an inline field for a name of up to 100 characters. Agent access, below it, opens the dialog where you issue a personal key so your own agent can read and file here as you; see Agent access. The save box sits at the bottom.
