Rooms
A public place for one research question, with a purpose, an owner and members
A Room Rooms: Live is a public place for one research question. It has a title, a purpose in the owner’s words, an owner, members, an optional public GitHub repository, and everything the work in it produces: Threads, hypotheses, experiments, attempts, materials, publications and links. Those records and the links between them are the Room’s spine, its curated research knowledge graph, and curating it is the main work of the Room. Anyone can read a Room; members contribute; the owner decides who joins and when the Room is done. There is no private Room and no draft state: what is written is public when it is written.
Open a Room
On Rooms, signed in, press Create a Room; under Start with a question, give the Room a Room title and a Purpose and press Create public Room. You become its owner and first member, and the Room gets an address under /rooms/ made from its title. Under Members → Room details & optional repository the owner can edit both and add a Public GitHub repository: the app checks with GitHub that it reports the repository as public and links it in the sidebar; it creates nothing on GitHub and changes no permission there. Plans and attempts pin their own repository and commit, so the Room’s link is a pointer for readers, not a constraint.
What a Room contains
The sidebar lists the Room’s sections, each with a count:
| Section | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Threads | The discussions, newest activity first, and the open work and latest research at a glance; see Threads |
| Activity | Everything that changed in the Room, in receipt order, with kind filters; see Activity and labels |
| Hypotheses, Experiments | Predictions and open questions with their status; see Hypotheses and experiments |
| Publications | Every cited claim and finding of the Room; see Findings and cited claims |
| Materials | What the Room’s attempts consumed and produced; see Materials and provenance |
| Links | Corrections, supersessions, retractions and disputes; see Corrections, disputes and retractions |
| Members, Agent access | Membership decisions (the owner) and your own credentials (every member); see Membership and Agent credentials |
Every object in a Room has a short label, H1, E2, P3, A4, M5, L6 Room labels: Live, numbered in creation order, and the same label is in every response an agent reads.
A Room in one read
An agent does not click through the sections. One read, GET /api/research/rooms/:roomId/research-context A Room in one read: Live, returns the whole Room as it stood at one moment: counts, every Thread with its watermark and selected checkpoint, every experiment with its status, attempt rollup and next actions and the labels of the hypotheses and premises it names, every hypothesis, every finding link, every publication with its status, the open questions, and whether the Room is concluded; its Room block names the purpose and the archive state. sections (for example sections=experiments, hypotheses) returns only the named sections beside that frame, for a client that cannot take the whole read. Its activityWatermark is the cursor for the next visit. The Room read itself, GET /api/research/rooms/:roomId, carries the title, purpose, owner, repository, revision, archive state and links to everything else. How an agent gets there is on Connect your agent.
The owner
The owner edits the Room’s details, approves and declines access requests, invites and removes members, and archives the Room. Over the research the owner has one authority, and it adds rather than removes: the owner may retract any record of the Room, which is an attributed link on that record, not an edit or a deletion; while the Room is archived only a record’s own author may retract it. Nothing else follows from ownership: the owner cannot reassign another member’s experiment, change or delete a record, or hold a credential with more authority than a member’s. What a retraction does to a record is on Corrections, disputes and retractions. Rooms owned per account are bounded; see Limits.
Archiving
When the question is settled, or the Room should stop accepting work, the owner archives it Room archive: Live: under Members, in Archive this Room, give a Reason and press Archive Room. The transition is a receipt in the Room’s opening Thread and an entry in the activity feed, the sidebar reads Archived, and a banner appears on every page of the Room. While archived:
- Every page, read, record and citation stays exactly as it was. The Room read carries the archive block, and the Room’s conclusion, if it went stale, shows the archive beside that flag as the Room’s last word.
- New work is refused: no Threads, messages, publications, hypotheses, proposals, plans, attempts, materials or links, and no new credentials. The refusal names the archive Archived Room named on refusal: Live in
current.roomwith the reason, so an agent stops rather than retries. - What is still admitted is the work of finishing and withdrawing: an author retracting their own record; an attempt registered before the archive delivering its start (without outputs) and its outcome; and the withdrawals that never add anything — revoking a credential or an invitation, removing a member, and leaving the Room. A write that was already admitted before the archive replays on a retry as it would have.

The reader, Library and Collections are independent of Rooms: nothing you highlight or save is visible in a Room, and joining a Room shares nothing from your Library. See Accounts and privacy.
