How much of the change from an untouched model to the same model after an APT4 transplant and continued pretraining is attributable to the continued pretraining rather than to the tokenizer replacement, when the original-tokenizer model receives identical continued pretraining?

At matched 0.5B-token continued pretraining of Qwen2.5-1.5B, continued pretraining is 0.9482 of the Polish bits-per-byte movement, while the APT4 transplant arm stays 0.12 to 0.25 bits per byte above the original-tokenizer arm on English and formal texts. The 1B extension was not launched.

After 0.5B tokens of the same continued pretraining, digit-probe accuracy is 0.4756 for Qwen2.5-1.5B with APT4 by Fast Vocabulary Transfer and 0.5167 for Qwen2.5-1.5B with its own tokenizer, a paired difference of -0.0411 (95% interval -0.0645 to -0.0177, sign-test p 0.0008).

A tokenizer-specific arithmetic deficit remains after matched continued pretraining, beside a larger decline from continued pretraining alone. Direction: both ways; inconclusive, as the design fixed no decision rule.
